In the beginning of the digital world around the 1980s is when the Rich Black term was born. Prior to that, a Black with a cyan bump was all that was needed for a really rich black or solid black. I believe that when the graphic computers came into play in the 80's, is when the term rich black was born and given to the computer generated blacks that were in a four color job. The dumb computers assigned four colors to the blacks automatically to maintain the four colors of the job, it even made the black text in a four color job, CMYK which caused allot of headaches.
